Currently, only a draft, the “Ordinance on Restrictions and Prohibitions on the Use of Electric Energy,” is something the Swiss Federal Council is getting ready to implement if there is a national energy crisis. It describes four stages of escalation should the nation encounter an energy crisis.
About 60% of Switzerland’s power comes from hydropower, making hydropower the primary source of the country’s energy needs. During the winter, productivity decreases. Additionally, Germany and France which are experiencing an energy crisis due to the conflict in Ukraine. France is more vulnerable to the energy crisis than other European countries because of its limited nuclear availability and temperature-sensitive demand. A more limited ban will probably replace an instant ban on EVs because the law wants to control “restrictions and prohibitions on the use of electrical energy to safeguard the country’s electricity supply.”
As Switzerland is going to ban Electric Cars, there must be some impacts. By existing laws, the Swiss government may restrict the temperature in public buildings to no more than 20 degrees Celsius. It advises users to keep their washing machines at no more than 40 degrees Celsius. If the situation worsens in Switzerland, businesses must close two hours earlier.
In addition to limiting energy consumption, the idea may forbid concerts, plays, and springtime celebrations. If the situation worsens, the nation intends to limit the usage of electric vehicles to only the most necessary journeys. The Swiss power plan also calls for the prohibition of cryptocurrency mining and the disabling of escalators.
