Electric vehicles are becoming more mainstream every year and with few viable EV options for families, the 22025 Volkswagen ID Buzz Microbus aims to address a largely untapped market. The ID.Buzz’s design recalls the German company’s iconic Type 2 Microbus—or VW Bus for short—which inspired the new van’s retro design. Apart from its unique nostalgic exterior aesthetics, its spacious cabin will have flexible seats and three rows.
The 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz Microbus all-electric powertrain will come in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, offering a driving range expected to be around 260 miles (ca. 418 kilometers). Plugged into a DC fast-charger, VW says the van will charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent within 30 minutes. The company plans to eventually introduce its plug-and-charge technology that eliminates the need to use an app or card to pay to unlock the charger.
When the2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz Microbus goes on sale in the US in the fall of 2024, it will mark the long-awaited return of the Volkswagen van to our shores.
Prices for the 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz Microbus are expected to start around $50,000.
Customers can choose between a single-motor, single-speed transmission, rear-wheel-drive powertrain or a more powerful dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. The rear-wheel-drive bus produces 282 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor version puts out about 330 horsepower. The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus rides on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MEB) “skateboard” platform, so the battery is mounted low in the floor. We get a bigger battery than in Europe, with a usable capacity of 86.0 kWh. Volkswagen hasn’t released range estimates yet, but based on other Volkswagen EV products, we’d expect a range of about 260 miles and a charge time of about 30 minutes, with a 10% battery boost to 80% using a DC fast charger. %.
The increase in power is because of the use of stronger permanent magnets in the motor and improved thermal management. With the new motor, the2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus’s top speed is an electronically limited 99 mph, compared to the two-row engine’s 90 mph, compared to the original Type 2’s walking speed.
The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus comes as standard with an 86.0-kWh battery pack, but Volkswagen has yet to reveal the driving range. We expect the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus to have a range of at least 260 miles per charge VW claims those who plug into the DC fast-charger will charge from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes.
One of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus’s defining details is its cavernous and configurable interior. The front seats have adjustable armrests and tables that fold out of the backrest for rear seat passengers. The front seats also have a removable center console. The US version has three rows of seats with space for seven riders; A pair of second-row captain’s chairs are available, but capacity drops to six passengers. Standout standard features of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus include a 10.0-inch digital gauge cluster, customizable ambient lighting and a set of massaging front seats.
The Volkswagen Van’s infotainment system primarily works via a 12.9-inch touchscreen that sprouts from the center of the dashboard. A 10.0-inch digital gauge display is also standard. We expect the ID.Buzz to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and possibly a rear-seat entertainment system. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless device charging should also be on the roster.
